A massive recall has been issued for several cheeseburgers from Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches after a potential Listeria contamination was linked to the products. The recall, which was announced Friday, affects the “Pepperjack Cheeseburger,” the “Bacon Cheeseburger,” and “The Gambler.” These cheeseburgers were distributed to stores in North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wyoming.
The recall comes in response to a broader action taken by BrucePac, the supplier of the meat used in the sandwiches, which recalled nearly 10 million pounds of meat due to Listeria concerns earlier this month. BrucePac has since expanded that recall to 11.8 million pounds, sparking a heightened alert for food safety.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled cheeseburgers, but Dakota Tom’s urges customers not to consume the affected products. Instead, consumers are advised to return the cheeseburgers to the store for a full refund or discard them to prevent potential health risks. According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. For pregnant women, the infection can result in miscarriages or stillbirths.
Symptoms of Listeria infection can include fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The recall affects both retail consumers and institutions such as schools, which had also received some of the recalled products. Consumers are urged to check the USDA’s posted list of affected meats and take appropriate action.
