An Unprecedented Assault on Kyiv
The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv has endured a night of terror after being targeted as part of the “most massive air strike” launched by Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion. The attack on the night of Saturday, June 28, 2025, saw one person killed and at least 26 others injured in Kyiv after dozens of drones struck the city, causing significant damage to infrastructure.
The assault on the capital was part of a nationwide barrage involving a total of 537 Russian drones and missiles. While Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept an incredible 475 of the targets, the 72 drones that penetrated Kyiv’s defenses still managed to inflict death and destruction.
A Failed Push for Peace
The massive escalation came just days after a failed diplomatic effort by President Donald Trump to broker a ceasefire. According to a report from Yahoo News, Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to propose a halt to the fighting, but the suggestion was promptly dismissed.
Trump, who has often boasted of his ability to end the war, expressed his frustration with the Russian leader’s intransigence, stating that he was “disappointed” and that there was “no progress” to be made.
“Russia Does Not Intend to End the War”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seized on the timing of the attack, arguing that it proves the hollowness of Moscow’s supposed willingness to negotiate. “Russia once again demonstrates that it does not intend to end the war,” Zelenskyy said in a statement.
Following Putin’s rejection of his ceasefire proposal, Trump held what Zelenskyy described as a “very important and fruitful conversation” with the Ukrainian leader. They reportedly discussed the urgent need for continued U.S. weapons shipments to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia’s escalating aggression. The attack has only deepened the resolve in Kyiv and among its Western partners to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses for the long fight ahead.
I had a very important and fruitful conversation with @POTUS. I congratulated President Trump and the entire American people on the US Independence Day.
