As Hurricane Helene’s death toll surpasses 200, FEMA is facing increasing criticism for its response to the disaster. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) are among those accusing the agency of delaying vital aid to affected areas.
Musk shared information from a SpaceX engineer who alleged that FEMA obstructed the deployment of Starlink satellite internet, an important communication tool for those in the hardest-hit areas. According to the engineer, FEMA delayed Starlink shipments and required unnecessary escorts, slowing down relief efforts in Asheville, North Carolina.
Rep. Gaetz has joined the chorus of criticism, citing whistleblower reports suggesting widespread mismanagement within FEMA. He pointed out that emergency responders, including those from the Department of Defense, were left without clear instructions and were unable to assist in the relief efforts.
In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Gaetz demanded a full accounting of FEMA’s spending, questioning whether disaster relief funds were misused to assist illegal immigrants instead of hurricane victims. Gaetz argued that FEMA’s mismanagement has worsened the devastation caused by the storm.
Mayorkas has acknowledged FEMA’s financial struggles, revealing that $1.4 billion had been spent over the past two years on illegal immigration. Critics say that FEMA’s budgetary issues have left it ill-prepared to handle disasters like Hurricane Helene, resulting in a slow and ineffective response.
As FEMA continues to face pressure from lawmakers and the public, the agency is being urged to explain its actions and provide transparency on how resources were allocated during the crisis.
