In a major escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran, over 200 missiles were launched into Israel by Iran. The attack, which took place in two waves, marked the largest missile strike on Israel in the ongoing regional tensions. Israeli defense systems, along with assistance from the U.S. military, successfully intercepted most of the missiles, although several struck areas in central and southern Israel.
The Iranian assault comes after weeks of intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah leaders, resulted in more than 1,000 casualties and displaced over a million people. Iran claimed that its missile launch was retaliation for the killing of key Hezbollah figures, including leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded swiftly, stating that Iran had “made a big mistake” and would face consequences for the attack. Netanyahu affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself and warned that Israel would continue to strike back against Iran and its allies in the region, including Hezbollah and Hamas.
President Joe Biden reiterated the U.S.’s unwavering support for Israel, stating that the U.S. had provided critical assistance in intercepting the missiles. “We are fully supportive of Israel,” Biden said, noting that U.S. military aid played a vital role in minimizing the damage caused by Iran’s attack.
As tensions rise, the U.N. Security Council has called for an emergency meeting to address the escalating situation in the Middle East. The region is now on the brink of a broader conflict, with both sides preparing for further action.
