Moscow Blasts West Over Ukrainian Assassination Of Chemical Weapons Chief

Russia has condemned Ukraine and its Western backers after Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s chemical and biological defense forces, was assassinated in a scooter bombing in Moscow. Ukrainian officials claimed responsibility, further escalating the already tense conflict.

Kirillov, 54, was killed alongside an aide when a remotely triggered explosive detonated as they exited a residential building. Russia’s Investigative Committee described the attack as a calculated act of terrorism, with video footage of the blast released by Ukrainian sources.

Ukraine accused Kirillov of war crimes, alleging his orders led to thousands of chemical weapons incidents. “Such an end awaits all war criminals,” a Ukrainian official declared, calling the general a legitimate target.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev denounced the attack as cowardly and vowed retaliation. “Ukraine’s regime is desperate, but such actions will be punished,” Medvedev stated.

Russia has reported that a 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the killing of Kirillov.

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, accused NATO countries of encouraging Ukraine’s actions through silence. “Those who ignore such acts are accomplices to terrorism,” Zakharova said, further straining relations between Russia and the West.

With the conflict now extending into Moscow, Russia has suggested Western intelligence may have been involved, signaling a dangerous escalation in the ongoing war.
