In a recent interview, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) proposed an idea that has sparked significant debate: adding President Joe Biden to Mount Rushmore. During a conversation on CBS News, Pelosi praised Biden’s presidency, suggesting that his accomplishments warrant such an honor.
Pelosi described Biden as “a Mount Rushmore kind of president,” emphasizing his consequential role in the nation’s history. “He was in a good place to make whatever decision – the top of his game,” she remarked.
The interview took an unexpected turn when CBS host Lesley Stahl expressed her surprise at Pelosi’s suggestion. “Are you really saying that he belongs up there on Mount Rushmore? Lincoln and Joe Biden?” Stahl asked, incredulous.
Pelosi responded by acknowledging the existing figures on the monument, including Teddy Roosevelt. “I don’t say take him down. But you can add Biden,” she stated.
The idea of adding Biden to Mount Rushmore has not been met without criticism. Detractors argue that Biden’s policies have been detrimental to the country, making the suggestion seem outlandish. The proposal has ignited debates about the criteria for such an honor and the impact of Biden’s presidency.
In the same interview, Pelosi addressed rumors about her involvement in pushing Biden out of the 2024 presidential race. “No, I wasn’t the leader of any pressure [campaign],” she insisted. “Let me say things that I didn’t do: I didn’t call one person. I did not call one person. I could always say to him, ‘I never called anybody.’”
Despite her public statements, a CNN report from last month claimed that Pelosi privately advised Biden that his chances of defeating former President Donald Trump were slim due to poor poll numbers. According to the report, Pelosi warned Biden that staying in the race could jeopardize the Democratic Party’s hold on power.
When pressed by MSNBC about whether she believes the 81-year-old president should step down, Pelosi remained noncommittal. “I want him to do whatever he decides to do, and that’s the way it is,” she said. “Whatever he decides, we go with.”
The conversation between Pelosi and Biden, whether it occurred in person or over the phone, reportedly involved other prominent figures, including former President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Pelosi’s suggestion has added another layer of complexity to the discussion about Biden’s legacy and the future of the Democratic Party.
