Authorities in Pennsylvania are investigating the theft of 100,000 organic eggs worth approximately $40,000, which were stolen from a parked distribution trailer over the weekend. The incident took place in Greencastle outside Pete & Gerry’s Organics on Saturday night.
Pennsylvania State Police Chambersburg responded to the scene and confirmed that the eggs had been taken at around 8:40 p.m. The company has since issued a statement acknowledging the theft, saying they are working closely with law enforcement but are unable to provide further details due to the ongoing investigation.
Officials have yet to reveal how the thieves managed to make off with such a large quantity of eggs or whether they have any suspects in mind. There are also no indications yet as to whether the eggs were targeted due to rising prices, as the cost of eggs has remained high in recent months.
The price of eggs has been increasing nationwide, with December’s average cost reaching $4.15 per dozen, marking a 14% rise from the previous month. This surge is linked to an ongoing avian flu outbreak, which has significantly reduced the supply of laying hens.
Pete & Gerry’s Organics, which partners with more than 200 small farms across several regions, has been producing organic eggs for decades. The company has gained recognition for its high farming standards and its commitment to sustainability.
The investigation remains ongoing, and law enforcement is asking for the public’s help in tracking down those responsible for the theft. Anyone with information is urged to contact Pennsylvania State Police Chambersburg.
