Politicization Of Legal System Deepens With Bannon Charges Brought By Leftist New York City Prosecutor

Strong ally of former President Donald Trump and influential organizer within the conservative movement, Steve Bannon, 68, is facing criminal charges that resemble the federal charges for which Trump had pardoned him before leaving office, but these charges are being brought by New York City.

The former Trump advisor, according to the Washington Post, faced a federal indictment over he and others getting contributions for a $25 million dollar effort called “We Build the Wall.” Prosecutors alleged that donors were told their funds would go towards construction of the border barrier.

If the state charges mirror the federal charges that Trump pardoned Bannon on, is this a violation of the Fifth Amendment’s double jeopardy clause? The Washington Times says no.

According to its report, a presidential pardon only applies to federal charges “and does not preempt state charges, even if it’s the same underlying conduct.”

Two of Bannon’s former associates have already pled guilty to charges in the case, but the former presidential advisor’s spokesperson said the “phony charges” are part of the partisan weaponization of the criminal justice system against political opponents.

Bannon was found guilty less than two months ago of contempt of Congress for resisting subpoenas from the Jan. 6 House committee.

New York has become the fulcrum for those seeking to bring down the former president and his closest associates. Trump has already fought back and scored a major victory over New York Attorney General Leticia James’s scouring of his financial dealings.

The Post said that the New York case against Bannon will be held in the state Supreme Court by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Bragg, of course, is a George Soros-backed radical who has neutered the NYPD by refusing to prosecute many crimes that plague the city. In a misguided attempt to right wrongs from generations past, Bragg seeks to avoid incarceration for all but the most serious crimes.

It’s clear that there is a wave of weaponization by leftist bureaucrats across the country with the aim of silencing and disorganizing the conservative movement. After all, it was Bannon who recently fired a shot at the bureaucracy at CPAC when he called for an end to the administrative state.
