A critical security incident unfolded at Trump International Golf Club on September 15, 2024, when a would-be assassin was thwarted in his attempt to harm former President Donald Trump. Ryan Routh, 58, from Hawaii, was apprehended after coming dangerously close to Trump with an AK-47 rifle and a camera.
According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Routh was positioned between 300 and 500 yards from Trump. Armed with a scoped rifle and a GoPro, he intended to document the attack. The Secret Service intervened, firing several shots at Routh, though it is unclear if he fired back.
The security arrangement at the golf course was limited due to Trump’s status as a candidate rather than a sitting president. Bradshaw noted, “If Trump were currently the president, the entire course would have been secured.”
The lack of security seems to ignore the recent and very close attempt on Trump’s life, where Secret Service failed to stop a bullet that miraculously missed Trump as he turned his head during the speech he was giving.
Trump addressed his supporters shortly after the incident, stating, “I am SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!”
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) expressed relief that Trump was unharmed, emphasizing the seriousness of the threat. This incident follows a previous assassination attempt in July, underscoring ongoing risks.
The FBI is conducting the investigation, with increased security anticipated for future events. Authorities have requested that the public avoid the area around the golf course. Despite the attack, Trump remains dedicated to his campaign and undeterred by the threat.
