Routh’s Background And Foreign Activities Prompt Urgent Review By US Authorities

The recent arrest of Ryan Wesley Routh, who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, has prompted a deeper examination of his criminal history and foreign ties. U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies are under pressure to address these concerns.

Jeffrey Veltri, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Miami Field Office, announced that the Department of Justice National Security Division is collaborating with local authorities to investigate the incident. This includes executing search warrants and utilizing all available resources to understand Routh’s background and motives.

Jeff Danik, a former FBI agent, expressed disbelief that Routh was not previously monitored by U.S. intelligence. Given his criminal history and activities in Ukraine, Danik suggested that agencies such as the CIA and NSA should have been aware of Routh’s activities. He questioned whether Routh’s electronic communications had been intercepted or monitored.

Routh’s criminal record includes several serious charges, such as felony possession of a machine gun, and although he was convicted, he did not serve prison time. This has led to questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement’s handling of his case and the FBI’s response to a 2019 tip about his illegal firearm possession.

Routh’s interactions with local police in Greensboro, North Carolina, further illustrate his problematic behavior. A notable 2002 incident involved a standoff with police after a traffic stop, highlighting his aggressive tendencies and resistance to authority.

His recent foreign activities, including attempts to recruit fighters for Ukraine and his support for progressive causes, are now under investigation. Routh’s book, Ukraine’s Unwinnable War, which includes inflammatory comments about Trump and controversial calls for violence, adds to the complexity of the case.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to determine whether U.S. intelligence agencies had prior knowledge of Routh’s threats and connections, and if any lapses in monitoring contributed to the recent assassination attempt.
