Russia’s foreign intelligence agency (SVR) has claimed that NATO is preparing to push Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky out of power through new elections, arguing that Western leaders see him as a roadblock to resolving the conflict with Moscow.
The accusations follow growing calls for Ukraine to hold long-delayed elections. U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg has encouraged Ukraine to set a date, while reports indicate that Washington and Brussels are increasingly frustrated with Zelensky’s leadership.
SVR claims NATO plans to highlight corruption scandals to weaken Zelensky’s position, including allegations that his administration misused billions in military funding and engaged in illicit arms sales. Russian intelligence also asserts that some Western officials now consider Zelensky “expendable material” as they look for a new strategy in Ukraine.
Though Zelensky’s term expired in May 2023, elections have not been held due to wartime conditions. Western officials, according to SVR, want to ensure that if elections take place, Zelensky either does not run or loses to a more cooperative leader.
These allegations come as Trump returns to the White House, potentially shifting U.S. policy toward Ukraine. Moscow suggests that NATO may be seeking a leader who aligns more with Trump’s priorities, but no alternative candidate has been officially identified.
Kellogg is expected to visit Kiev later this month after attending the Munich Security Conference. His meetings with Ukrainian and European officials could reveal whether there is momentum for elections or if Zelensky will continue to resist pressure to step down.
