Trump Teases Trudeau As ‘Governor’ During Trade Negotiations

Donald Trump jokingly referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada” amid discussions about tariffs and trade. The lighthearted remark, shared on Truth Social, highlights Trump’s confidence as he pressures Canada to address U.S. concerns.

“It was a pleasure to meet with Governor Justin Trudeau,” Trump quipped. “Our discussions on trade and tariffs will deliver spectacular results for everyone involved!”

The talks at Mar-a-Lago focused on Trump’s proposed tariffs, aimed at addressing the flow of illegal drugs and rebalancing trade. While 43 pounds of fentanyl were seized at the Canadian border last year, much larger amounts were intercepted at the Mexican border. Canadian officials argue that linking their challenges with Mexico’s is not appropriate.

Trudeau cautioned that the tariffs could raise prices for American consumers, warning, “These tariffs won’t make life more affordable for people in the U.S.” Despite their differences, both leaders described the talks as constructive.

Kristen Hillman, Canada’s U.S. ambassador, defended the nation’s trade relationship, highlighting that 77% of Canadian exports go to the U.S. and $170 billion in energy products were sold to the U.S. last year. She emphasized that Canada’s smaller economy naturally skews trade metrics.

Trump added humor to the negotiations by sharing an A.I. image of himself holding a Canadian flag with the caption, “Oh, Canada!” Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc called the comments jokes, reflecting friendly relations heading into Trump’s second term.
