Zelensky Optimistic That Trump Administration Will Help End Ukraine War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed hope that the war between Ukraine and Russia could come to an end more quickly under the leadership of President-elect Donald Trump. Speaking with Ukrainian media outlet Suspilne, Zelensky highlighted the potential for a change in U.S. foreign policy to accelerate peace efforts.

“There is no exact date, but with the policies of the team that will now lead the White House, the war will end sooner,” Zelensky said. He underscored Ukraine’s commitment to diplomacy, adding, “No one wants peace as much as we do.”

Trump has frequently voiced his determination to resolve the conflict. During a recent interview on X, he stated, “I want to get Russia to settle up with Ukraine and stop this… I want to get that done before I even take office.” Trump has argued that strong U.S. leadership could prevent prolonged conflict and save lives.

Zelensky also addressed the potential for negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, acknowledging that talks could provide an opportunity for Putin to break his political isolation. However, Zelensky remained skeptical of Putin’s intentions, saying, “It does not mean that he does not want to sit down at the negotiating table with one of the leaders. And do not negotiate — I would say so.”

Trump has linked the war’s escalation to perceived weakness in U.S. foreign policy, particularly citing the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. He argued that the Biden administration’s actions emboldened Putin to invade Ukraine, a situation he claimed would not have occurred under his leadership.

Zelensky emphasized the importance of achieving a resolution that ensures justice and sovereignty for Ukraine. His optimism reflects the possibility of a shift in international dynamics under Trump’s administration, which could bring new urgency to ending the war. While challenges remain, Zelensky’s remarks highlight a cautious hope for peace in the near future.
