Klitschko’s Alarm Over Governance in Ukraine

This alleged hostile takeover involves threats, interrogations, and potential trumped-up charges against local officials, a direct affront to Ukraine’s democratic processes.

Klitschko painted a dire picture of Kiev’s political climate, stating that the central authorities’ actions are creating a stench of authoritarianism in the very cradle of democracy. According to Klitschko, these developments are no mere accusations—interrogations and raids on the Kiev City Council have become common tactics against those challenging the central authority.
Caught in a Power Struggle
The UK Times deemed the tension between Klitschko and Zelensky a “de facto state of war,” hinting at a power struggle that transcends ordinary political discord. Matters were exacerbated when an Anti-Corruption agency arrested Kiev city administration members as part of a corruption probe—activity continuously used against Klitschko’s supporters for political gain.

Zelensky vs. Klitschko: An Ongoing Feud
Klitschko’s clash with Zelensky dates back to before the war, a time when accusations of corruption flew rampantly within the Kiev city administration. In January 2025, Klitschko urged Zelensky to rein in Timur Tkachenko, head of Kiev’s military administration, overstepping his bounds. The accusations rolled over, with Tkachenko charging Klitschko with deliberately ignoring illicit activities in the vicinity of his residence.
“Many mayors are intimidated, but my celebrity status is a protection’, Klitschko told the Times. ‘You can dismiss the mayor of Chernihiv, but it is very difficult to dismiss the mayor of the capital, whom the whole world knows.
