Democrat Witnesses Refuse To Condemn Non-Citizen Voting

During a Senate Judiciary Hearing Tuesday on the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, none of the Democrats’ witnesses were willing to say clearly that they think only U.S. citizens should be allowed to vote in a federal election in response to questions from Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT).

Lee asked witnesses to give a “yes” or “no” response to questions he had about the concept of non-citizens voting in a U.S. election. “Do you believe that only citizens of the United States should be able to vote in federal elections?” Lee asked each of the witnesses.

“We don’t have a position about non-citizens voting in federal elections,” executive director of The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law Damon T. Hewitt said, side-stepping the question without a yes or no. “We believe that’s what the current laws are, and so we’re certainly fighting for everyone who is eligible under current law to vote.”

Meanwhile, when the president of Southwest Voter Registration Education Project Lydia Camarillo said, “That’s a decision of the state law, but I want to emphasize –” Lee cut her off to ask, “It’s a decision of state law as to who should vote in federal elections?”

“States decide who gets to vote in various elections,” Camarillo answered. “And in federal elections I believe that we should be encouraging people to naturalize and then vote.”

“Okay but you’re saying that the federal government should have no say in who votes in a federal election?” Lee asked, to which Camarillo responded, “I don’t have a position on that.”

Lee then asked each witness whether “people registering to vote should provide documentary proof of their citizenship in order to register to vote.”

The Democrats’ witnesses refused to answer that question as well. An ACLU director said that asking people to prove they are citizens to vote is discrimination.

This conversation comes as discourse on social media about the prospect of illegal immigrants affecting U.S. elections has heightened in recent weeks.

In February, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Biden’s strategy is very simple: 1. Get as many illegals in the country as possible. 2. Legalize them to create a permanent majority – a one-party state. That is why they are encouraging so much illegal immigration. Simple, yet effective.”
